Alaska Fishing

Dan Jacobs

The view, the cold, the lighting, the cold the atmosphere and did I mention the cold. For beginner and professional alike there is little to compare with the excitement of Alaska fishing. King Salmon is the preferred prey and we will look at some ways of improving your experience in that area. Of course if you bring a guide he will very likely have a lot of good advice, but if you do not then this will be very useful.
First of all if you go to British Colombia you will hear them talk a lot about a fish called Chinook. This is not a new fish it is their word for King Salmon.  And, as any hunter will tell you, to be successful you must know your prey and know your environment. Therefore a good understanding of the King Salmon and its habits is essential. You must choose your lures and tackle based on the conditions at the time. Some conditions to consider are:

  • the clarity of the water
  • the weather
  • lighting
  • time of year
  • water depth and temperature at your location

The clarity of the water will certainly affect your choice of lure for Alaska fishing. This is because, if visibility is bad the fish will have difficulty seeing a lure so you will do better with a brightly coloured one. Having said that, you do not have to worry too much about visibility as far as lighting is concerned because there is almost continuous daylight at the height of the fishing season. Herring pieces and herring-like lures are often used with great success in off-shore fishing in Alaska.
There is a huge variety of lures available today and many of them even work very well in most conditions. But, you cannot beat local knowledge. So, ask around and see what is working right now in your area.
An experienced angler may have some ideas about locating the fish in the prevailing conditions in a given area. Failing that, if fishing in deep water from a boat it will be necessary to find the fish by trying various depths. Of course if you have a fish finder this is a lot easier especially if you are not familiar with the area.
Most of Alaska is a wilderness. That’s what brought you there right? Well then, hire a guide on your first trip. The extra expense is well worth it. When you know where you are going and feel confident about what you are doing and where you are going you may venture out on your own.
Being a wilderness holiday destination people often overlook Alaska as a holiday destination unless they are specifically going for Alaska fishing. I am here to tell you that it is actually a holiday destination for all. There is something there for everyone from singles to couples to sportsmen. The fishing lodges are now very modern and make an attractive location for no fishing holiday makers who just want to get away from it all.
There is the variety of daily activities available. Alaska has millions of square miles of water and woodland that is sure to keep you interested and amused. Apart from the lakes and rivers which are obvious locations for fishing there is the scenery and seclusion. Alaska fishing locations are not just for fishing. Many holiday packages today offer hiking, horseback riding, and Quad-bikes, museums, historical sites, national parks and other activities and locations both along the coast and inland. The chances are there will be something to occupy everyone in your group while you are Alaska fishing.
