Refugium Sump In The News

Fantastic Question Could It Be OK To Combine Multiple Purification Methods Using One Aquarium

Here is another great question I got today about combining several under counter carbon water filters methods on one aquarium (the reef method). Here's the question and my answer:

ISSUE: "Warren did I understand you to say that you want to utilize multiple under counter carbon water filters methods on one aquarium? Just like aJaubert plenum with a deep yellow sand bed in the display tank with a mud filtration system refugium in the sump with get back water flowing thru a UV. This is just what I'd like to accomplish on my own new 135 gal reef container. What exactly are your thoughts with this combo? "

RESPONSE: Thus, to answer your question about if i like using multiple under counter carbon water filters methods using one aquarium, my answer isn't any - and I'll make clear.

Do i think it's wise to employ a Jaubert plenum in your exhibit tank with a mud filtration system refugium in the sump, along with a UV? Yes that could work nicely.

Overall, my own philosophy is that while there are various methods or under counter carbon water filters formats for a successful deep sea tank, you generally want to pick one and stick with it. Put simply, that you don't want to install a algae scrubber, with a protein skimmer and also a living sponge under counter carbon water filters system and a UV sterilizer and a trickle filter and live stone (I do believe you get the concept). The various components which can be used for one method may counteract additional component from the different method. And what you wind up with is a mess that doesn't work, and it has chronic water quality problems. For instance, the UV sterilizer would kill off any normal water borne bacteria and phytoplankton and would thus partly starve a full time income sponge filtration system. Or having an aggressive necessary protein skimmer with a living sponge filter system wouldn't work, as the protein skimmer would starve the actual live sponge of its food origin.

Or another example would be the utilization of bioballs/trickle filter in conjunction with an algae scrubber. The particular bioballs/trickle filter would increase the chronic nitrate levels that the algae scrubber or perhaps refugium is designed to reduce.

Thus, yes {it's} OK to mix a Jaubert plenum in the exhibit tank with a refugium/mud filter in the sump, and also a UV sterilizer. Just {don't} overload attempting to install each and every known type of under counter carbon water filters into your system. {I've} seen a public aquariums do that with their 1, 000 Gallon Reef tank (this was years back) and the exhibit was a nightmare to work - and yes it {didn't} look anyplace near as effective as it should have during the time. Furthermore, together with your Jaubert plenum, you could likely discover that based on how large your calcium/magnesium demand is, that you may have to supplement for calcium and magnesium (alkalinity too).

My partner and i only have a little knowledge with Jaubert plenum devices, but did investigation them aggressively years back when they began to gain popularity. What are you hearing/learning regarding their effectiveness?

Depart a remark here and let me know very well what under counter carbon water filters method you might be using and what your experience has been.

Questions about Refugium Sump

Breeding shrimp in refugium?

Can I breed ghost, mysis, or brine shrimp in my refugium sump safely? Will they jump out?

That is a really neat idea. There may be some practical draw backs though.

What kind of tank is the refugium attached to? Could you describe the refugium a little? Also would you want the baby shrimp to overflow into your other aquarium?

Each of those shrimp live under very different conditions. You would have to pick one, probably depending upon your regular tank.

Ghost or glass shrimp often live in temporary waters Rainfall may be their major source of water. They eat algae, veggie material, baby shrimp, slow dim-witted live-bearer fry and probably many other things. Their eggs/ cysts may stay viable a long time in dry ground. However I have also seem 1000s of them in a Mississippi bottom land river/swamp in the Mingo Wildlife refuge in Missouri. That vegetation rich water tends to be acidic, but is very productive. They must be an important part of Mingo's (not Mongo's) food chain.

We could net lots of them with a sweep of the net. Their ability to leap out of there was simply amazing!

Brine shrimp live in hypersaline waters around the world. Sometimes the mineral is mostly sodium chloride, but sometimes mostly calcium and magnesium compounds. Filter feeders, they take a lot of algae and bacteria from the water. They reproduce parthenogenically much like Daphnia. When the water conditions get uncomfortable, they then parthenogenically produce males and females. Those males and females mate and produce their resting cysts - which we know as brine shrimp eggs. They can last dessicated 100 years and hatch.

Mysis or opossum shrimp often live in large lakes. They are heavy feeders on zooplankton. They are a major food source for fish in their waters. When well meaning scientists put them in one of the western lakes, Lake Tahoe, along with Lake Trout, the Mysis shrimp devastated the micro-food web and the Lake trout unbalanced the top of the lake's food chain, One by product of that was the extinction of the Lahontan cutthroat trout.

One thinks of large fish introductions disrupting an ecosystem. I never realized that the introduction of little shrimp could also make such a mess!

I defrost and rinse frozen Mysis shrimp and have used bbs. They have their uses for aquarists and are awfully important in their native waters.

At any rate an interesting, very creative idea. Pick one of the shrimp. :)
